1. Infinitive

Pengertian: Infinitive adalah bentuk dasar dari kata kerja (verb). Biasanya digunakan untuk menunjukkan tujuan, harapan, rencana, atau tindakan yang akan dilakukan. Infinitive terbagi menjadi dua:

  • Infinitive with "to": terdiri dari to + verb dasar (contoh: to go, to study)
  • Infinitive without "to": verb dasar tanpa "to", biasanya setelah modal verb (contoh: can go, must study)
a. Infinitive with "to"

Rumus: to + verb dasar

Fungsi:

  • Sebagai subjek atau objek dalam kalimat
  • Setelah kata kerja tertentu (want, plan, hope, decide, dll.)
  • Untuk menyatakan tujuan atau alasan
Contoh Kalimat:
  • I want to learn English.
  • To travel the world is my dream.
  • He studies hard to pass the exam.
b. Infinitive without "to"

Rumus: modal verb + verb dasar

Fungsi: Digunakan setelah modal verb (can, must, should, may, etc.) dan beberapa kata kerja khusus seperti let, make, help (sometimes).

Contoh Kalimat:
  • You must study harder.
  • She can sing very well.
  • Let me go with you.
  • They made him cry.
2. Gerund

Pengertian: Gerund adalah bentuk kata kerja yang diakhiri dengan -ing dan berfungsi sebagai kata benda (noun). Gerund dapat digunakan sebagai subjek, objek, atau setelah preposisi.

a. Gerund sebagai Subjek

Fungsi: Digunakan di awal kalimat sebagai subjek utama.

Contoh Kalimat:
  • Swimming is good for your health.
  • Reading improves your vocabulary.
b. Gerund setelah Preposisi

Fungsi: Digunakan setelah preposisi seperti in, on, about, for, without, after, before, dll.

Contoh Kalimat:
  • She is interested in learning Spanish.
  • Before leaving, turn off the lights.
  • He left without saying goodbye.
c. Gerund setelah Possessive Adjective

Fungsi: Ketika gerund digunakan setelah kata ganti kepemilikan seperti my, your, his, her, our, their.

Contoh Kalimat:
  • Her singing impressed the judges.
  • My working late caused some issues.
  • They didn’t like his coming to the meeting unprepared.
